CHAPTER 19
After Meisha left, I changed into a light-blue seersucker shirt with nice jeans, a Navy hat, and aviator glasses. It was more casual but respectful. Holm dressed similarly.
He walked out of the bathroom carrying his shirt, and I saw his scars from the underwater fight that almost killed him a couple of months earlier. Angry red, but healing, one scar ran from his sternum, wound down his side, and then over to his left hip. Small dots along either side showed where the doctors stapled the wound closed after many hours of surgery. Heâd been extremely lucky not to have any damage that couldnât be repaired. For him, the hardest part of his recovery was being smothered by the restrictions required for him to heal.
âAre you sure you want to go?â Holm asked as he put on his shirt. âI swear I can hear their screams when Iâm there.â
I put my elbows on my knees and sighed. âThe Arizona guys, theyâre still down there, you know? As long as theyâre buried at sea in that spot, itâs up to us to keep their memories alive.â
He nodded. âI get it. You know Iâm with you. Itâs just that I keep thinking that the next burial in my life will be Ronnie.â
I grabbed the Ferrari key and pocketed it. âLook, if youâre not feeling it today, stay with the car while I go in. We can go again later, with Ronnie.â
He nodded, grabbed his hat and shades, and we headed out. It was a mild day, and driving with the top down was what I needed to ease some of the tension I felt with everything happening. It was hard to tell if this helped Holm, but at least his shoulders werenât so stiff, and he melted into the passenger seat.
The parking lot was only half full. I found a spot at the outer edge to lower the chances of anyone hitting the Ferrari. I looked to Holm.
âWhat do you want to do?â
He took a deep breath and looked up to the sky. Sunlight reflected off of his sunglasses. âTheyâre looking down on us, yâknow. All those people who died that day. I like to think I served well and honored the memory of everyone who went before.â
âYou did,â I reassured him. âRobbie, youâve always been the best of us. The platoon, MBLIS, everyone. We did the jobs we had to do for our country, and hell if you didnât do those jobs and come back yourself.â
âThat doesnât mean Iâm not scarred,â he muttered. âBut I am alive.â
âWe both are. You sure as hell tried to change that when we fought Simon Kelley. He was a tough son of a bitch, and you survived.â
He nodded, sat up, and got out of the car. That was his answer, and I knew it would do him some good. I closed the roof and locked the car as I watched him walk toward the visitor centerâs entrance.
Holm was my best friend, a partner and brother.
